Does My Child Need Urgent Care? 4 Warning Signs They Do

At Rapid City Healthcare, we understand the concern and worry you experience when your child is unwell. While many illnesses and injuries can be managed at home with rest and care, some situations require urgent medical attention.

Here are four warning signs that indicate your child may need urgent care.

1. High fever

A high fever in a child can be alarming and may be a sign of a severe infection or other underlying medical condition that requires prompt treatment. Visit the urgent care or emergency room if your child's temperature reaches 104°F or higher. In some cases, a high fever can lead to seizures.

Our experienced medical team can assess your child's condition and recommend the appropriate treatment to lower their fever and address the underlying cause.

2. Persistent cough

If your child is experiencing a cough that isn’t relieved by over-the-counter medication and home remedies, bring them to our urgent care facility for treatment. We can run x-rays to determine the cause of the cough and develop a treatment plan to relieve the coughing and help your child feel better faster.

3. Allergic reactions

Allergic reactions can range from mild to life-threatening. If your child displays severe allergy symptoms such as swelling of the face, lips, or tongue, difficulty swallowing or speaking, or hives over a large area, it is critical to seek immediate medical attention.

Our team is experienced in managing allergic reactions and can administer appropriate treatments to ensure your child's safety. Go to the emergency room if your child shows any signs of anaphylaxis (such as difficulty breathing and a drop in blood pressure).

4. Mild to moderate cuts

Children are naturally active and can be prone to accidents and injuries. If your child sustains a cut that may need stitches to stop bleeding and promote proper healing, our urgent care facility can help.

Delaying treatment for cuts can increase the risk of infection or result in more significant scarring as the cut heals. Our medical team is skilled in wound care and can treat your child’s injury effectively.
